The San Juan College (SJC) Native American Center will host a Navajo Shoe Game workshop Thursday, January 25 and Navajo Shoe Game on Saturday, January 27.
Késhjéé: Navajo Shoe Game is a winter social guessing game. In Navajo culture, the game originated between day and night animals competing for it to either be day or night all the time.
Teams play against each other to find a hidden ball inside a shoe/moccasin with tactics and strategies used to distract players during the guessing game process.
Navajo Shoe Game is a family-friendly event and open to all San Juan College students and the community. Participants can play in the game or watch and enjoy the fun. Admission is free.
“We are excited to host a Navajo Shoe Game for the community and encourage everyone to take advantage of learning more about the Navajo culture through this time-honored winter tradition.” says Brandon Ashley, Director of the SJC Native American Center.
It is highly recommended that you attend the workshop from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 25 to learn about the history, rules and strategy of the game. Then apply those skills and knowledge during the game on Saturday, January 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. Both events will be held at SJC student housing, Nizhóní Sunrise Suites, on the main San Juan College campus.
